Is my dentist scamming me?

Disclaimer

The short version: this site explains how dental care and dental insurance generally work. It can't tell you what's right for your mouth or your plan.

Education only

Everything here is general information for education. It isn't dental, medical, legal, or financial advice, and it isn't a substitute for an exam by a dentist who has seen your teeth and X-rays.

No dentist-patient relationship

Reading this site, or sending us a question, doesn't make us your dentist. We can't diagnose you or recommend treatment for you.

Don't wait on urgent care

If you have pain, swelling, or signs of infection, contact a dentist promptly. Facial swelling or fever needs urgent care. Trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that's spreading, is an emergency: call 911 or go to an emergency room. Never delay care because of something you read here.

Insurance information is general

Every dental plan is different. What we describe is how plans commonly work, not how your plan works. Your plan documents, your plan's member services, and your Explanation of Benefits are the final word on your coverage.

Accuracy

We work to keep pages accurate and cite reputable sources, and a licensed dentist reviews every page before it's published. But rules, research, and plans change, and we can make mistakes. We can't promise that everything here is complete, current, or right for your situation. If you spot an error, please tell us.

Procedure codes

Dental procedure codes (the ones that start with D) come from the CDT code set, published by the American Dental Association. The descriptions on this site are our own plain-language summaries, not the official wording.

Links to other sites

We link to outside sources so you can check our work. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for their content.

Reader questions and experiences

When you send a question or share an experience, please leave out names, offices, insurers, places, and dates. We may edit submissions for length, clarity, and to remove anything identifying, but we never change their meaning or make them up. Not every submission is published. Experiences are published only with your permission, and they reflect one person's experience, not advice. Answers to reader questions are general education, like the rest of the site.

Your decisions are yours

You're responsible for the decisions you make about your care, your coverage, and your bills. To the fullest extent the law allows, this site and its author aren't responsible for any loss or harm from using or relying on what's here.
